What
is Tele-Learning?
Tele-learning basically means that you can enroll and 'attend'
classes in a variety of ways. These include instruction through the print;
audio / video tape, computer software and Internet mediums.
Ultimate flexibility and quality of learning are offered at the American
Liberty University. Whether it be Degree completion; professional enrichment
or personal development, we expedite an excellent 'user friendly' curriculum.
Why Tele-Learning
at ALU?
Home electronics have come into their own as cutting-edge educational
tools. By utilizing the new facilities combination of the above referenced
options, home (or office) learning is a positive reality and an excellent
alternative to actual, full-time campus attendance. Tele-learning can
effectively minimize many circumstantial frustrations. These include the
realities of available travel time and logistics, and a general institutional
apathy toward students with restricted availability. Adults with full-time
careers and/or childcare responsibilities face very difficult challenges
at traditional campuses. In essence, how can you be in two places at once?
As a solution to these problems, American Liberty University (a private,
nontraditional research university based in the United States) offers
undergraduate and graduate degree programs of high caliber and maximum
flexibility of access.
ALU represents and provides an ideal match of historic academic excellence
combined with the most modern means of communication, creating an environment
of effective instructional interface and feedback. Our university stresses
and prides itself on enabling students and instructors to interact as
if they were literally in a lecture hall or lab environment - but with
far more flexibility and constructive contemplation intervals.
Our instructors are drawn from both the academic and professional realms,
and will meet with you and your fellow students in a highly motivated
electronic forum to facilitate the communication between the best of both
worlds. Personal contact is also encouraged, in the form of effective
discussions to optimize your learning experience.
In essence, we provide a clear; concise, precise and interesting academic
environment without the often daunting necessity of physically commuting
... united with the highest and most ultimately rewarding of academic
standards.
Group Study Atmosphere
The American Liberty University draws in a fascinating cross-section
of people from a wide variety of the social matrix. Tele-learning students
can range from adults with professional and/or familial responsibilities
to young people in remote locations. All have the opportunity to connect
with a network of people with similar interests to enable lively and stimulating
discussions and provide a framework for professional networking.
Off-campus and on-campus learning can be blended in many of our programs,
offering pupils a wide range of options for access and success. Students
are supported in all areas of endeavor, logistics and acclimation by ALU's
motivated and efficient staff including the various aspects of general
services, the extensive library and bookstore.
How Does Tele-Learning
Work?
Through all of the above referenced mediums, carefully structured,
comprehensive and challenging courses are prepared. These courses offer
complete materials and may vary in structure, but all are formulated to
involve students in stimulating activities that elicit interest and enhance
learning.
Is This An "Easy
Way Out"?
Hardly. Off-campus students will find that they must devote
just as much of their time toward mastering the course material as on-campus
students at any credible university. [As a rough 'time guide,' students
should anticipate spending between 15-to-20 hours per week for each unit.
Tele-Tutorial Potentials
Depending on specific courses and common needs, a tutorial
class meeting under the guidance of a University-appointed tutor is a
definite plus. While not compulsory, such tutorials definitely offer students
extra learning reinforcement
Weekend Schools
Perhaps the most enjoyable of scholastic options is that offered by our
Saturday & Sunday class opportunities. These offer each student an
optimal opportunity for personal interaction between fellow students and
our academic staff. Personally attended lectures are always a bonus, and
tutorial one-on-one meetings and unit-team forums invariably provide for
an enriched academic experience. Depending on the specific courses involved,
weekend schooling is variably scheduled as to best advantage, whether
it be once a week or more, with the duration dictated by student interest
and participation.
To 'sum it up' succinctly, (which is rather rare in a college catalogue)
we make it possible for you to receive an optimal blend of quality education
and convenient location - wherever you are!
Note: The Weekend School may not be offered on all courses.
Student Services
ALU offers a wide range of educational and support for off-campus
students. These all can be accessed through Student Services, Academic
Administrative Services, the Student Associations and the Library Service.
The Academic Administrative Services provides advice and practical direction
to students on matters of admission procedures; fees, enrollment, graduation
requirements, assignment processing and examinations.
All students receive a Student Handbook which delineates the functional
aspects of the ALU, including services ranging from the campus library
through support assistance for students with physical challenges.
Student Services
Group
The Student Services Group assists in coordinating Student
Services through a range of specialist advice for off-campus students.
These include topics ranging from the above referenced services to language
assistance for international students; personal and educational counseling,
career development and employment strategies, and tips on financial assistance.
The Student Services Group goal is to facilitate students in their mastery
of the specific skills and knowledge of available resources so that they
may gain maximum educational and personal benefit from their studies at
the American Liberty University.

Career Development
and Employment Services
The Career Development and Employment Services (CDES) provides
assistance with the career issues of off-campus students throughout the
tenure of their studies. Areas of involvement may include advice regarding
a career plan, employment clarification options, postgraduate job marketing
and additional supportive educational directions.
Career Counselors are available for any Tele-Learning students who would
appreciate advice on any aspects of the ALU program(s).
Counseling Services
Advisors are available to assist students in addressing such
concerns as adjusting to tertiary, off-campus study programs. Such academic
issues include motivation; confidence under 'isolation,' balancing family,
workplace and collegiate responsibilities, and balancing all the various
conflict resolution issues arising from the stresses involved.
Library Facilities
The ALU collection includes relevant periodicals, videotapes,
audio tapes and slides with equipment appropriate for their usage.
Students can access the Library's catalog and range of databases from
their personal computers. In addition, off-campus students can acquire
books and other materials form the library through the mail, facsimile,
telephone and E-mail.
You can e-mail the Library Department at library@libertyuniversity.edu
Student Associations
Student Associations operate on each campus of the American Liberty University
and all students are entitled to become members. A membership fee is included
within enrollment fees. These funds enable student associations to maintain
facilities and provide services.
The ALU's Student Associations are governed by student committees composed
of directly elected student representatives and office holders. Each committee
is responsible for administering the finances of the association. The
goal of the associations is to enhance University life by providing the
best possible facilities, services and opportunities for interested participants.
They aim to represent and safeguard the interests of attendees in matters
ranging from common rights and privileges through representation and advocacy,
and represent direct communication between all elements of the University.
Services they provide may include:
· academic support and advocacy
· education interest groups
· housing and accommodation services
· financial advice on student-related matters
· bookstore
· publications
· social and cultural activities
· clubs and societies
· sporting and recreational activities
Student associations exist for the benefit of members and all students
are actively encouraged to participate. Participation can be a bonus activity
recognized by prospective employers.
There are many areas of interest within the college associations that
can enhance University life. Involving yourself in the cultural, social,
sporting and educational forums offered through your college association
can be rewarding both personally and professionally.
Bookstore
Prescribed textbooks, general and reference books, students'
research and dissertations, University hat, T-shirt, pen, organizer and
suitcase may be purchased from the University Bookstore. An off-campus
book list and an order form are sent to all off-campus students prior
to the commencement of each semester.
The Master's Degree
Option A:
This requires the preparation of a thesis. The thesis is typically a written
formal document, which addresses, in an original fashion, some important
concern of the discipline. A thesis may require an on-campus defense.
A thesis involves significant independent work and academic credits are
allowed for its preparation.
Option B:
The option "B" degree does not require a thesis. Instead, more
credits are earned in other types of courses and/or a scholarly paper
is required. Credit requirements vary greatly; most master's degrees vary
from 30 to 45 semester credits.
The Ph.D. Degree
The Ph.D. is the highest academic degree offered by the University. Those
who earn it must demonstrate significant intellectual achievement, high
scholarly ability, and great breadth of knowledge. The nature of the degree
program will vary greatly depending on the discipline involved. In addition,
doctoral work requires heavy participation in research or other kinds
of creative activity. Particular projects may assume any of an almost
infinite number of forms.
There is no University residency requirement for Ph.D. degree programs;
however, group study, seminars and special classes may exist at the department
level. Students should check with their departments about all policies.
For students who submit a master's degree in partial fulfillment of these
requirements minimum of 65 semester credits beyond the baccalaureate is
required.
